One of our daughters went and got a cat last week from her boyfriend's family. Danged if she didn't call it Detective Mittens. It is a pretty little thing, sorta calico and sorta whatever. She is very skittish and is just starting to allow me and my wife to get close. My daughter has been buying this cat all kinds of stuff to amuse it, or herself, I can't decide.
As for me, personally, I am not a real cat person. Sure, they're - cute and all that. And we do have problems with field mice getting into the house every now and then. As a matter of fact I just trapped one yesterday and the cat was useless. But a dog will earn its keep with fang and bark and I'd just as soon make her work for a living too. Then I remembered my laser pointer. She earns her keep now by making me laugh.

I've just finished talking to PETA. They'll be knocking at your door any time now.
I'm sure you'll be courteous.
Great. Now I'll have to take down the treadmill for the electric generator!
When you're tired of using the cat for that sort of amusement, you can put a collar on it and stake it out for an eagle or a coyote or something. It rates higher on the amusement scale and helps feed necessary predators.
Cats are about as useful as lava lamps, we've got two of the furballs so I know.
Laser pointers are the only things that cost money that a cat will play with for more than 5 seconds.
They'll never stop playing with that sucker.
LL - I dunno. I usually never tire of tormenting small animals. This thing drives her nuts.
Subvet - someone moved a lava lamp around the room and I chased it. Can't help myself.
Kid - it's like watching a monkey on a cupcake. I don't tire of it either.
Cats are very entertaining when you find out what entertains them.
Admiral - she is still a skittish kitten, won't let me pet her. But she comes in the room looking for me when she gets lonely now. I love the look in her eyes - she looks nuts. I think she realizes that I hold the key to the bright little red light that she loves to chase.
At least you have some traps that are working for you! I'd be afraid of letting my cat go near a mouse that probably has a lot of diseases. Victor makes ones that seal the mouse inside, including any diseases it has. It’s 100% hygienic: http://www.victorpest.com/store/rodent-control/m265#desc
