This is what my street looks like like on this sweltering Sunday morning. Notice how my tulips are blossoming? My wife just loves tulips! They were planted by my daughter two years ago. See them in my front yard? They're the red and yellow flowers under the snow.

We're expecting up to 24" of additional snow tonight so of course I'm worried about my tulips dying in the heat. I'd better water them today so they'll be covered in a nice thick coating of ice to protect them from the awful heat that Al Gore says is destroying the planet.

These are people attending a Central New York track meet yesterday (April 14, 2007) at about 1:30 pm. Notice how they are bundling up to protect themselves from the incredible heat generated by Global Warming. Minutes before I took this picture, some kind people wrapped that poor woman in a pink blanket just before she collapsed from heat exhaustion. She was starting to feel better when I snapped this shot.

The concession stand had almost run out of hot chocolate and coffee when I stopped there. The heat drives us New Yorkers to swill down enormous quantities of these beverages to protect ourselves from the ravages of Global Warming.

If it gets any hotter I'll have to buy extra wood for the fireplace just to cool us down.

Here It Comes Again, Maybe

The NOAA is issuing a weather advisory for possibly heavy snows tomorrow night through Wednesday and then more snow showers through the end of the week.

There is an excited undercurrent considering the possibility of a school snow day.

My snow blower broke last week.

UPDATE:

14 FEB o7 - We got about two feet of snow thus far (late afternoon) and are expecting another 12-18" by tomorrow morning. Fixed the snow blower so we're good to go. But it still took us a half hour to get my stuck car out of the driveway.

That is a 6' snow bank by the lamp post in my front yard.

So What, We Have Some Snow

You may have noticed that Upstate NY is getting some face time in the national news because of all the lake effect snow that has fallen this week. I received maybe a foot or more at my house and places in the northern part of the county have gotten maybe 2 or 3 feet. Just thirty miles or so north of us is where the real snowfall has buried Oswego County and parts east of Lake Ontario. Up to 120 inches (that's ten feet of white, powdery frozen water to you southerners) of new snow has been officially recorded in some areas of the North Country since last Sunday.

I also see that Miss Sue from Eagle Lake, Texas, sent my blog buddy Cookie some real beautiful photos of other parts of the country that are not buried under ten feet of snow. These photos make Cookie feel so much better after digging his weary, sorry ass out of a snow bank.

Now I admire the scenery and appreciate the stunning natural beauty of our great nation. And I appreciate the efforts of our dear southern friends to educate us of the benefits on living closer to the equator. But there are other aspects of southern living that we here in the Great White Frozen North do not enjoy. I have included some photos of these.

No one denies that upstate New York does get snow and a lot of it, and the temperatures are less than optimal from December through March. But maybe because of all the snow and cold we don't see a lot of other things, like illegal immigrants doing this:

Thank you, but I'll keep the snow.

Normal Upstate NY Weather

There was an ice storm yesterday that lasted through the night. It wasn't a bad one, only about an eighth of an inch of ice; not nearly enough to cause damage. But our trees are covered in a thin layer of crystal. There is a big boxwood elder right behind the house and the nearest branches are only four feet away from the kitchen window.


It has been so unseasonably warm this winter that it is almost a relief to finally get some bad weather. Almost, not quite.

With the bad weather comes traffic accidents. There was a twenty car pile up just north of Syracuse on Interstate 81 yesterday morning due to black ice on a bridge over Rt 11. One motorist who stopped to assist somehow fell over 50 feet to the road below and is in critical condition. In another ice related accident just north of here in Oswego County, two people were killed early this morning when a small car switched lanes and ran head on into an eighteen wheeler dumptruck.

Luckily this stretch of weather came on Sunday and Monday; today is a holiday, cutting down on traffic.

We had almost 8" of snow last Wednesday and it is already melted. Forecasts are for colder temperatures and more snow later in the week.
